Behind the Curtain: October 2018

October 5, 2018 by Caroline Leave a Comment

I’ve come to look forward to these monthly posts about what I’m into beyond travel because there’s so much more to my life than where I go, despite the fact that it’s something I love. It’s funny how many people respond with their obsessions or agree with mine!

As with last month, I’m sharing the things I’m obsessed with at the moment. Thanks for following along! Be sure to share what you’re loving this month below!

Reading

I’ve been on a graphic novel kick lately and, after hearing Seth Rogen talk about Preacher on Armchair Expert (he produced it), I knew I had to give it a chance. It’s definitely wacky and graphic at times, but I enjoyed it. There are only eight collections of the comics and I read the first two, so it’s a fairly small commitment.

I also want to start watching the show at some point. I also pre-ordered a copy of  The Walking Dead Vol. 30, so I read it in a matter of hours when it arrived. My friends Mike and Anne of Honeytrek wrote a book, Ultimate Journeys for Two, last year and I finally got to read it! To see what else I’m reading, check out my Goodreads Profile here (which is also my author page!).

Listening

The jury is still out for me about the second season of Serial. I want to like it, but will need a few more episodes to know for sure. I’m loving the second season of Slow Burn since the Clinton scandal is something I was alive for. It’s also interesting hearing it in the #MeToo age.

I loved Dirty John and Dr Death is totally different and terrifies me because I inherently trust doctors. I listened to a similar season of Breakdown that discussed a doctor that molested patients. And after hearing an ad for Happy Face, I subscribed and the first haunting episode finally dropped.

Watching

So many good shows are coming back this month including The Walking Dead (Rick’s last episodes!), Doctor Who (female doctor!), and Riverdale. And I was also many years late, but Happy Endings on Hulu is a fun show to watch in between all the heavy stuff.

I finally saw I Feel Pretty on a plane, which I saw filming in Boston last summer, and while there were problematic elements, I thought the casting was excellent, especially Michelle Williams. But I would have loved to see more Aidy Bryant and Busy Phillips!

Loving

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: Halloween! There are so many things happening this month, including my favorite events like the Little Five Points Halloween Parade here in Atlanta as well as Walker Stalker Con, the Walking Dead fan convention in town.

Yes, I already have a half dozen costumes lined up. I’ll be spending the real day with my sister at a Stranger Things party where I will be Steve, complete with a bat and Members Only jacket. I’m also excited that some of my favorite podcasts are coming to town. Girls Gotta Eat and The Moth both have live shows in the next two weeks!

Celebrating the book with friends

MY BOOK IS FINALLY OUT! I came home after a long travel day followed by a dead car battery to a box of my books! I’ve since seen a copy in stores and it’s finally real. I was super stressed about money last month so I ended up pitching more than usual. So this month I have stories out by 17 South, Hilton, Lonely Planet, Atlanta Magazine, Frommer’s, and Explore Georgia.

I’m currently working on a spec story that I reallllllyyy hope works out, one for Eagle Creek, and even more for Explore Georgia. See what else I’m working on via my Contently profile (and hire me!). I also created my own website, CarolineEubanks.com.

Traveling

Universal Orlando

My trip to Durham, North Carolina was a delight with a trendy midcentury style hotel, cool locally owned stores, craft breweries, and fantastic restaurants. From there, I went to Austin, Texas, my first visit, for TravelCon, a travel blogging conference. I didn’t have as much time to explore as I wanted, but I will definitely go back. Stay tuned for posts on this trip soon!

Next up, I’m doing a short local campaign that I’ll be posting about on @thisismysouth. The next weekend, I’ll be bringing my friend Jessica to Universal for a girls weekend around Halloween Horror Nights. I’m fully prepared to pee my pants. A few weeks later, I’ll be doing a quick trip to Panama City Beach, Florida.
