Behind the Curtain: October 2020

I’ve come to look forward to these monthly posts about what I’m into beyond travel because there’s so much more to my life than where I go, despite the fact that it’s something I love. It’s funny how many people respond with their obsessions or agree with mine!

As with last month, I’m sharing the things I’m obsessed with at the moment. Thanks for following along! Be sure to share what you’re loving this month below!

Reading

Surprisingly enough, I read a lot of books this month, finishing Sing, Unburied, Sing. I also tore through Coming Clean, a tough-to-read memoir about a girl whose parents are hoarders, and Big Little Lies, which has some difficult situations as well. I’m now reading Someday, Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham (of Gilmore Girls fame) that I picked up at my Little Free Library.

To see what else I’m reading, check out my Goodreads Profile here (which is also my author page!).

Listening

There’s no shortage of new podcasts to listen to these days. One is Racket, which tells the wild story of an Atlanta strip club that was investigated for racketeering, mobster ties, prostitution, and embezzlement. Unfinished Short Creek is about a Mormon cult with child brides. No Compromise is a fascinating look into the gun rights groups deemed “too extreme” by the likes of the NRA.

Watching

This month has been a dumpster fire in the world, so I’m watching as much light viewing as possible. The two exceptions are Untouchable, a documentary about the fall of Harvey Weinstein, and The Most Dangerous Animal of All, a show about the Zodiac Killer.

Otherwise, it’s been trashy reality shows and comedies, including Hart of Dixie, Pen15, and The Only Way is Essex. For your Halloween viewing, I can’t recommend enough What We Do in the Shadows (from Taika Waititi) and the 90s version of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, both on Hulu.

Loving

Is it super basic to say “fall?” It’s finally cooled down in Georgia and pumpkins are out. I’m already planning my costume and sorting out just how I’m going to put out candy safely for the trick-or-treaters I hope come to my house.

Working

Last month, I complained that a story of mine had been killed by a second dream publication. Thankfully, that story has now been accepted by another dream publication, Mental Floss. All’s well that ends well.

I also had my first stories run with TripSavvy and Apartment Therapy. I wrote this long guide to Southern music destinations for Fodor’s and have another coming out for Roadtrippers.

Traveling

Clarksdale
Clarksdale

After many months at home, I took my first work trip last week. I was definitely nervous since there were so many elements out of my control, but it went well. I spent five days in the Mississippi Delta.

Next up, I’m heading back to Knoxville and its surrounding areas on assignment. Afterward, I have two more trips in 2020, plus a writing retreat, so I’m going to be staying close to home. So far, nothing is set for 2021!

I was reading your post about the four lakes in North Georgia and noticed that you put Moccasin Creek State Park on Lake Rabun which is incorrect. This state park is on Lake Burton.
I’ve been there a few times and you can verify on the state park site. Anyway, enjoyed the article, but thought you would want to know.

    Take care,
