Photo Essay: Bigger is Better

March 5, 2011 by Caroline 8 Comments

After a short stop at the Big Merino, I was reminded of all the great “big” stuff I’ve seen in my time. I love the kitsch of these roadside attractions. There are hundreds here in Australia, but here’s just a taste of what I’ve seen in my travels.

The Big Merino, Golburn, New South Wales, Australia- January 2011

Big Submarine, Holbrook, New South Wales, Australia- January 2011

Big Truck, Grave Digger, Somewhere between Atlanta and Washington DC- June 2001

Big Cootie, Washington DC Children’s Museum- June 2001

Big Shark, Myrtle Beach, SC- April 2010

Big Clog, outside Amsterdam, The Netherlands- December 2006

Big Whale, Bar Harbor, ME- July 2010

Want even MORE big stuff?

Big Guitar, Nashville, TN

Big Binoculars, Venice, CA

Big Paul Bunyan, Bangor, ME

Big Chicken, Marietta, GA

Big Peach, Gaffney, SC

Big Milk Bottle, Boston, MA

Big Boot, L.L. Bean, Freeport, ME

What’s your favorite “big” roadside attraction? How many of these have you seen?

Haha us Aussies have some crazy big things! There’s even a Wiki page dedicated to it! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia's_big_things

The Big Banana in Coffs Harbour is one I visited plenty as a kid – I’ve also seen The Big Ned Kelly in Glenrowan, the Big Koala and The Giant Worm but there are probably many others that I’m forgetting!

So much left to see! Psyched for the Big Banana though. I think Aussies win with the Big stuff.

This fall I saw Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox at the Trees of Mystery on Highway 101 in Northern California. It was super kitschy!
