Behind the Curtain: January 2015

behind the scenes

I’ve come to look forward to these monthly posts about what I’m into beyond travel because there’s so much more to my life than where I go, despite the fact that it’s something I love. It’s funny how many people respond with their obsessions or agree with mine! As with last month, I’m sharing the things I’m obsessed with at the moment. Thanks for following along! Be sure to share what you’re loving this month below!

Reading

IMG_9086

I received a lot of books for Christmas, so I better get started reading. I’m hoping to do better in this year’s PopSugar Challenge. Up on the docket are The Way of Wanderlust by Don George, Rising Strong by Brene Brown and Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. I also picked up four issues of the Walking Dead graphic novels, which I’m really enjoying. Check out my Goodreads Profile here.

Are there any blogs I should be reading this year? Let me know about those as well!

Listening

serial-logo

Serial is back! You can say I’m excited. I wasn’t sure how they would follow up such an interesting case as the Adnan Sayed case, but the Beau Bergdahl case is equally gripping. I also listened to a few episodes of Limetown, but I haven’t yet decided if I like it or not. In terms of music, I’ve pre-ordered the new Sia album and am going back through all my favorite Rilo Kiley albums.

Watching

Like everyone else, I’ve just started watching the Netflix documentary series Making of a Murderer. It’s like Serial but more intense, a tale of conspiracy and government cover-up. I’m not watching as much TV as usual in an effort to read more, but would love to hear any suggestions of what I should be watching!

Loving

Among the goodies I’ve fallen for in December, my favorite is my new Airportag shirt that reps my home airport. The company also sells pillows, tote bags, mugs and other items for travel lovers like us. I also got a Turkish towel for Christmas and have started wearing it as a scarf. It can also be used as a towel, blanket or sarong.

Working

To be honest, I didn’t get as much writing work this year as I’d hoped. I’ve tallied up all my work and while I made more money from writing than past years, I’m not that close to being able to do it full time.

But with that said, I’ve sent out a lot of pitches lately, so I hope some of them pan out. If you know anyone hiring, let me know! This month you can check out my post on Go See Write about the Mississippi Blues Trail, on the Professional Travel Bloggers Association blog about working with PR and a couple of posts for Her Packing List.

Traveling

behind the scenes

I came off a busy December, completing trips to San Antonio and Myrtle Beach before Christmas. I also took a quick trip up to North Carolina to spend New Years camping with my sister. Next up is this week in New York, where I’ll be on a panel at the New York Times Travel Show (come see me!). That’s all I have planned for the month, but you never know when something will come up!

Rising Strong is a fantastic book! Big Magic is sitting on my bookshelf, I’m excited to read it!

Ahh, I have to download the next season of Serial! The first season was the first podcast I actually listened to. I haven’t watched Making a Murder yet but I’m thinking of getting Netflix just to watch it!

Can’t wait to read it, Sky! I’ve only watched one of Making a Murderer but am also sucked into Jessica Jones.
